The Middletown Community Foundation is seeking nominations to give recognition to two of the community’s unsung heroes.

Nominations are being accepted for the Volunteer of the Year award and the Mary Jane Palmer-Nunlist “I Love Middletown” award. The awards will be presented at the Foundation’s Annual Meeting on Nov. 9 and an organization will receive a donation in their honor.

The “I love Middletown” award honors community members who engage in activities that help advance the City of Middletown who rarely get recognized or ask for recognition for their efforts, said T. Duane Gordon, executive director of the foundation.

Last year the award was given to two elderly statesmen of the community: the late Everett Sherron, who helped build airplanes in World War II, was an active Boy Scout most of his life, and volunteered at the Middletown Historical Society's Canal Museum every Sunday; and Harry Pratt, who flew bombers in WWII, served for 55 years on the Board of Junior Achievement in Middletown, and worked with United Way, Miami University Middletown and other organizations.

“We were deeply honored to celebrate these two gentlemen and their service to Middletown,” Gordon said.

The award is available to individuals, groups of individuals or organizations.

The Volunteer of the Year award, sponsored by the Mary Maurer Fund, recognizes volunteers between the ages of 30 and 50 who exemplify the art of giving of time and generosity to causes in the Middletown community, Gordon said. DeAnna Shores, manager of environmental prevention for Prevention First, Middletown School Board member and member of the Middletown area YMCA Advisory Board, won last year’s award.

Nomination letters should be mailed to the Middletown Community Foundation, 300 N. Main St., Suite 300, Middletown, 45424 or emailed to info@mcfoundation.org.

Nominations must be submitted by Sept. 30 and should include the nominee’s address and a brief description of the volunteer leadership or service. Call 513-424-7369 for more information.
